Fit 4 Server Virtualisaiton
As power, floor space and cooling costs continue to rise, companies are wanting to make substantial savings in their IT budgets. Virtualisation reduces cost by consolidating physical servers and running them as separated virtual machines (VM’s) on a physical host. With consolidation ratios upwards of 8:1 being usual, 8 physical servers can be replaced by just one host server. Heat output, power consumption and space are drastically lowered with hardware maintenance and server spend reduced.
Each VM is independent of the physical host hardware and can be transferred between physical hosts with no downtime and without the end users noticing, allowing for host maintenance, upgrades and load balancing. The headache of different hardware drivers for example is eliminated at a stroke and disaster recovery is simplified. A snapshot can be taken of the running VM – with no downtime or performance impact – and can be rolled-back to should an upgrade fail or once testing is complete. Backups are simplified and performance increased, as the entire VM image can be backed up and restored easily with no more relying on traditional backup agents that backup a server file by file.
There are three major virtualisation platforms in the market: VMware vSphere, Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper V.
